Explicit filtering for large eddy simulation as use of a spectral buffer

The explicit filtering method for large eddy simulation (LES), which comprises integration of the governing equations without any added terms for sub-grid-scale modeling and the application of a low-pass filter to transported fields, is discussed. The shapes of filter response functions of numerical schemes for spatial derivatives and the explicit filter, that have been used for several LES, ar...

Stochastic Coherent Adaptive Large-Eddy Simulation with explicit filtering

Stochastic Coherent Adaptive Large-Eddy Simulation is a novel approach to the numerical simulation of turbulence, based upon the wavelet thresholding filter, where the coherent energetic eddies are solved while modelling the influence of the less energetic background flow. In this study, in order to examine the quality and reliability of the method, additional explicit wavelet filtering is intr...

Spectral element filtering techniques for large eddy simulation with dynamic estimation

Spectral element methods have previously been successfully applied to direct numerical simulation of turbulent flows with moderate geometrical complexity and low to moderate Reynolds numbers. A natural extension of application is to large eddy simulation of turbulent flows, although there has been little published work in this area. One of the obstacles to such application is the ability to dea...

Large-Eddy Simulation of the Lid-Driven Cubic Cavity Flow by the Spectral Element Method

This paper presents the large-eddy simulation of the lid-driven cubic cavity flow by the spectral element method (SEM) using the dynamic model. Two spectral filtering techniques suitable for these simulations have been implemented. Numerical results for Reynolds number Re = 12000 are showing very good agreement with other experimental and DNS results found in the literature.
